Patient Information
Minimally invasive surgery has a number of important advantages for the patients:
- Lower complication rates after surgery
- Reduced hospital length of stays
- Improved cosmetic results
- Reduced transfusion rates
- Les pain due to smaller incisions
Less invasive surgery:
Research has been performed to investigate ways to make heart surgery less invasive.
One way to make the surgery less invasive is to reduce the size of the incision, from the routine sternotomy (middle of the chest) to a smaller incision.
Another way to make it less invasive is to avoid placing the patient on the heart-lung machine. This is also called Off Pump cardiac surgery.
